What you can expect

You will be picked up from your hotel to be transferred directly to Java island. After 40 minutes ferry crossing and about 100 minutes car drive, you will reach Paltuding base camp where you will begin the 2 hour-hike.

Once reaching the top of Ijen volcano, reward yourself with the dazzling, electric-blue fire that can be seen streaming down the crater at night. This blue glow is not lava but rivers of light from the combustion of sulfuric gases. You might encounter traditional miners who work at night under the eerie blue light to escape the heat of the sun. They can carry loads of 80 to 100 kilos once or twice a day. After the sun rises, walk your way down and drive to a nearby resort for breakfast. You will then make your way back to the harbour driving pass rural villages, coffee and clove plantations.
